Chelsea vs Malmö LIVE: Champions League result, final score and reaction

Tuchel in good shape at Chelsea and Malmö

Chelsea won a dominant group stage victory over Malmö in the Champions League on Wednesday night, sweeping the Swedish side 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Impressive in attack from the kick-off, Thomas Tuchel’s side opened the scoring through Andreas Christensen after just 10 minutes, when the center-back managed a volley for his first Chelsea goal. The Blues then doubled their advantage on the spot midway through the first half, as Jorginho opted against his usual captain to crush a penalty in front of Malmö goalkeeper Johan Dahlin following a foul on Romelu Lukaku.

This challenge marked the end of Lukaku’s evening, with the attacker soon limping into the tunnel. There was also an early exit for Timo Werner, who appeared to succumb to a hamstring problem on the cusp of halftime. Luckily for Chelsea, they continued to thrive on the pitch, starting the second half with a third goal courtesy of Kai Havertz, which produced a delicious, cut-off finish. Before too long, Jorginho completed the scoring by registering another penalty after Antonio Rudiger suffered a foul during a shot.

Chelsea’s breathtaking victory over Malmö overshadowed by injuries to Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner

Chelsea’s joy in an exhilarating offensive performance to send Malmo 4-0 was quickly washed away by concern over injury losses to Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner.

On a damp night at Stamford Bridge, Thomas Tuchel’s side sought to change assumptions that his side are more efficient than stunning, with Liverpool and Manchester City making headlines despite the Blues rather in the lead of the Premier League standings.

While the German’s ideas remain a work in progress in the final third, he can draw on one of his cornerstones for inspiration. Mason Mount, back in the starting lineup after coming on against Brentford, as one would expect, sparked an exciting opening for this Champions League group stage game with his wasp move.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel speaking to BT Sport: “We wanted three points and we wanted them and we have them both.

“We played with tremendous intensity, we demanded it of us and we played a great game until it was 4-0. We are very happy.

“We have an ankle twist for Romelu, and muscle and hamstring injuries for Timo, so they’ll be out for a few days I guess.

“Normally we are in a good position when it comes to injuries, only Christian Pulisic is absent, but we miss everyone. We have a lot of games, a lot of competitions, so now we have to face and find solutions, not d ‘apologies.

“Both were in good shape, they’re dangerous and can create and score so now we have to find some solutions and the guys who have been waiting for their luck have to step up and score. The race is on, the guys starting against Norwich have our confidence and we will try to find new solutions.

“We have already won games with Werner and Lukaku, we don’t want these problems too often, but it happens for a season.”

Mount has been excellent tonight after failing to start any of Chelsea’s last five games due to injury. Tuchel’s team are so much better when he’s on the team.
