The southernmost city in Europe, Ierapetra is sunny and charming. It is typically Greek. Its cobbled old town is full of taverns and cafes, and its fortress offers stunning views of the Libyan Sea.

Meaning ‘sacred stone’, its unique location, between endless beaches and rugged mountains, makes it a wonderful year-round destination with sunny skies, low rainfall and friendly locals. It also offers a divine new accommodation choice at Numo Ierapetra, a relaxed resort dedicated to presenting Ierapetra through a modern lens.

It’s a place to step back and relax in times of everything on demand.

The breathtaking nature that surrounds the resort has a profound influence on its design.

Nature and the surrounding landscape played a huge role in the design process, with Founder and Creative Director Constantina Tsoutsikou opting for a sophisticated color palette and straightforward approach. “Let nature speak to our souls”, rather than approaching conception with a rigid, preconceived plan. Humanity’s mark on the natural world is also reflected everywhere, with much of the furniture being recycled and structures and spaces reconditioned.

Designed to make your stay simple and carefree, the rooms flow perfectly, connecting the interior with the exterior and the eclectic interiors with the surrounding Cretan landscape. The perfect choice for the discerning traveler or the itinerant worker, we spent the first few mornings enjoying the patio while answering emails, coffee in hand, legs dangling in the pool. In the afternoon we take a cool bath, before starting the balmy October nights enjoying breathtaking sunsets with a glass of Cretan red wine, then feasting on local dishes in one of the two excellent restaurants in Numo.

During the hours in between, we explored the beaches and local towns, the uninhabited island of Spinalonga and the particularly notable towns of Plaka and Elounda. We also had the joy of experiencing the wonderful team of Bioroma Crete, a pioneering organic cosmetics and perfume company with whom we created our own fragrances in one of their delicious perfume workshops. Back at the hotel, a perfectly executed hour-long massage reminds us that we are here to disconnect.

Enjoying a beachfront location surrounded by evergreen gardens, Numo Ierapetra spans 17 low-rise buildings that cascade down to the beach. Passing through the village square, the open-air cinema, the gym and the shop, you arrive at the heart of the seaside resort, the hotel swimming pool; part of a bar and restaurant of 3000 square meters. It sets the tone for an upbeat vacation with international DJs and chefs.

For those looking for a more tranquil setting, the secluded beach is accessible directly from the pool and is dotted with tamarisk trees, sunbeds, and cabanas. It also offers one of the clearest waters that I have drifted in for a very long time. Crete is an island of people who have great respect for the nature that surrounds them, their waters are among the purest on this planet.

Paying homage to Cretan roots, Numo’s cuisine is local, familiar, fresh and tasty. Led by Konstantina Voulgari, trained at the Michelin-starred Auberge de l’Ile, traditional local dishes have been given a modern twist and are served with a contemporary sensibility. Menoa specializes in fine meats and meze, with dishes such as 24-hour slow-cooked lamb finished over the flames of the huge open kitchen grill, and served in an indoor / outdoor area near the restaurant. second swimming pool of the complex.

A mouthwatering feast of lamb slowly cooked for 24 hours and finished over the flames.

Unable to resist the lamb, the other guests also seemed to devour with joy. We wash it down with a bottle of local light red wine, the perfect accompaniment to this red meat banquet, having also ordered local sausages in a tomato sauce, also cooked over high heat. It’s an explosion of flavors and rich, succulent textures.

The following evening was spent at Tamaris, the hotel’s main restaurant, where fresh seafood is cooked in the show kitchen and guests can opt for casual seating inside or outside overlooking the sea. main pool and beach. Here we enjoyed meze before sharing a local catch of the day and lobster pasta, this time washed down with an equally delicious bottle of Cretan white wine.

Whether it’s immersive experiences, abandoned islets, friendly locals, year-round sunshine, or wonderful Greek dishes that bring you to this destination in southern Crete, Numo Ierapetra is an ode to barefoot luxury and good vacations. With a contemporary aesthetic fused with classic hospitality, modern cuisine combined with centuries of tradition, this is a hotel that offers the best at all times.
